Sealing Entry Points – Best Materials and Techniques to Keep Rats Out

I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in over a week. I kept hearing tiny scratching sounds behind the walls late at night, and now I’ve actually seen a rat dart across the kitchen floor—twice. I’m pretty sure they’re getting in through a gap near the utility pipes. I stuffed it with steel wool for now, but I feel like I’m just patching things in panic mode. I’m exhausted and kind of freaked out every time I walk into a dark room.

Ugh, I remember when that happened to us last winter. We kept finding chewed corners on cereal boxes and droppings near the boiler cupboard—gross doesn’t even begin to describe it. We ended up reading a few things and stumbled across this article on how to deter rats from the home. It’s really straightforward and helped us figure out which materials actually work long-term. We used a combination of wire mesh and expanding foam for tricky areas, and so far, no signs of movement. We also replaced an old vent cover we didn’t realise had gaps in it. Worth checking the outside walls too!
